Read the first chapter from the book “Buddhist Architecture of Gandhara” by Kurt A. Behrendt, Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This chapter introduces you to the history and geography of the ancient kingdom of Gandhara, first mentioned in the Rig Veda circa the first millennium BCE, and briefly describes the architectural features of Buddhist stupas and monastic complexes found in Peshawar Valley, Taxila and Swat (today in Pakistan), dating from the 2nd – 8th century CE.
